The RIMI2 program has two areas of emphasis: developmental/collaborative research projects and research infrastructure core-building.
Developmental/Collaborative Research Projects
The objectives for this area of emphasis are to:
- Increase the research opportunities for our faculty and students through collaborations with faculty, students and postdoctoral fellows at research-intensive universities;
- Enhance the opportunities for SF State faculty to publish research articles in leading journals with colleagues at our collaborating institutions; and
- Enhance the opportunities for SF State faculty to develop successful grant applications with faculty from our collaborating institutions.
RIMI2 will fulfill the objectives of this area of emphasis by supporting existing research collaborative, and by facilitating mentorships with faculty at research-intensive universities.

Research Infrastructure Core-Building
RIMI2’s Research Infrastructure Core-Building program focuses on three activities: faculty professional development seminars and workshops, faculty mentored fellowships, and a grant development resource facility.
Faculty Professional Development Seminars and Workshops
The seminars and workshops are professional development opportunities open to all SF State faculty. The Faculty Seminar Series on Health Disparities Research will feature guest lectures in the substance and methods of health disparities research as well as informational sessions on the RIMI2 Fellowship Program. The Series serves as the recruitment and selection gateway for participation in the Fellowship program.
In addition to the Seminar Series, faculty are invited to attend a one-day Grant Writing Workshop, conducted by Dr. Steven Russell of Grant Writers' Seminars and Workshops, LLC. The workshop will be designed to assist faculty in the development of proposals to NIH and other agencies that support health disparities research.
The Fellowship Program is an intensive, year-long training program in the strategy of formulating, writing (and rewriting), and submitting to NIH and to other agencies proposals that will be reviewed favorably and will result in funding. Three fellows are selected each year through a competitive application process. Those fellows will take part in a year-long mentored fellows training period with opportunities to attend seminars, workshops, and grant writing colloquia.
Grant Development Resource Facility
The Grant Development Resource Facility supports faculty at SF State who are developing grant proposals for health disparities research. The facility houses a multifunctional conference/interview room networked faculty workspaces with library resources for literature searches and special software that supports the research and grant writing process, and technical support staff.
